From 2018, children in the Bilby, Platypus, Kangaroo and Emu rooms at Columba Cottage will enjoy dance in the Iona Performing Arts Centre’s state-of-the-art dance studio. Taught by St Columba’s specialist dance teacher and supported by their regular educators, the children will experience dance in new and innovative ways that are not offered anywhere else in this region. With less focus on the technique of dance and more focus on movement as a holistic learning tool, our Full STEAM Ahead program will give children the chance to explore, observe, play, create, experiment and problem-solve.

Full STEAM Ahead is a pioneering program that uses creative movement to explore Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEAM) concepts and ideas. STEAM may seem like lofty subject matter for preschool children, but the link between early childhood and STEAM is indisputable. In reality, preschoolers spontaneously engage in STEAM activities indoors and out on a regular basis and this program will integrate the arts as a way to enhance life-readiness and preparation for future education where STEAM is becoming increasingly prominent. The Program is an integrated approach for children to learn about themselves and their world through dance with technology, dramatic props and diverse music.

Each day, a different room will come over to the Performing Arts Centre and this will be rotated throughout the year to maximise participation and exposure. The program covers weekly topics such as Numbers, Environments, Technology, Communication, Toy Design and Outer Space. There is truly something exciting and purposeful for every Columba Cottage child!

There is no need to enrol your child in this exciting dance Program, as it is going to be a part of the curriculum. If you have any questions at all about any aspect of the Program, please email Shelly Kelly.
