Columba Cottage is an Early Learning Centre where we provide pre-literacy and pre-numeracy in our Pre-school rooms. Our commitment to being an excellent Early Learning Centre has seen us partner with the Australian Government Early Language initiative which has one of our Early Childhood Teachers working with our Pre-schoolers as they learn French.

There has been much written lately about the cost of Pre-school vs the benefits of a Pre-school education. The Australian government pays a Child Care Benefit (CCB) and Child Care Rebate (CCR) to those who qualify – these reduce the cost of childcare considerably for some families. But there is still a question as to whether the cost of Pre-schooling is worth it for your child/ren.

Research consistently shows that children who have participated in high-quality Pre-school education programs gain significant long-term benefits from what has been termed the “Pre-school advantage” (Farrar, et al, 2007).

These advantages include:

  • higher levels of completed education and subsequent employment;
  • greater stability in relationships and lower rates of mental illness (Farrar, et al, 2007).

These gains are greatest for children from disadvantaged family backgrounds.

Yet The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) data lists Australia as having one of the lowest rates of spending on early childhood education.

David Sacks, education lead partner of Price Waterhouse Coopers (PwC) suggests that instead of putting more money into schools, we spend more on children’s education in early childhood.
